An onion, a piece of dust, and a genuinely devastating piece of news can all leave you in tears — but the fluid running down your face isn't the same fluid each time. Your eyes produce three chemically distinct kinds of tears, made for three different jobs.

Basal tears: the ones running constantly

Basal tears are being produced right now, whether you notice or not. This thin, continuous film keeps the surface of the eye lubricated, clear, and protected from everyday debris and bacteria. It's a low-volume, always-on baseline layer, and it's the tear type doing the most work with the least attention.

Reflex tears: the emergency flush

Reflex tears show up in response to a direct irritant — onion vapor, dust, smoke, a poke in the eye. These are produced in much higher volume than basal tears and contain a higher concentration of antibodies and protective compounds, functioning essentially as a rapid flush to dilute and clear whatever's irritating the eye as fast as possible.

Emotional tears: a different formula entirely

Tears triggered by strong emotion are chemically distinct from both other types — research has found emotional tears contain higher concentrations of stress-related hormones and proteins, including prolactin and ACTH-related compounds, that aren't found at the same levels in basal or reflex tears. This has led to a theory, not fully proven but widely discussed, that crying emotionally may help the body physically clear out stress-related chemical byproducts, not just express emotion outwardly.

Why the distinction matters

The differences aren't just academic — they're a reminder that "crying" isn't one biological event with different triggers, it's three different processes that happen to share the same delivery mechanism. A constant protective film, an emergency defense response, and a possible chemical release valve for stress all use the exact same tear ducts to do three genuinely different jobs.
