You're sitting still and a small patch of muscle under your eye, or in your calf, starts twitching on its own — a quick, involuntary flutter you didn't ask for and can't quite stop. It's unsettling the first few times, but it's also one of the most common, least significant things a muscle can do.

A single motor unit firing on its own

A muscle twitch of this kind, called a fasciculation, happens when a single motor neuron spontaneously fires and contracts the small bundle of muscle fibers it controls — visible or felt as a brief, localized flutter rather than a full muscle contraction.

Why it happens at rest specifically

Motor neurons are normally kept just below the threshold needed to fire spontaneously, but that threshold can dip under common, everyday conditions — fatigue, stress, excess caffeine, dehydration, and low magnesium have all been associated with a higher likelihood of fasciculations.

Why it's so hard to make it stop on command

Because the firing is spontaneous and originates below the level of conscious motor control, there's no direct way to voluntarily stop an individual fasciculation once it starts — it resolves on its own, typically within seconds to a few minutes.

When it's worth mentioning to a doctor

Occasional, isolated twitches — especially ones tied to caffeine, poor sleep, or a hard workout — are considered benign and extremely common. The pattern that's actually worth flagging to a doctor is persistent twitching combined with progressive muscle weakness, since that combination, not twitching alone, is what distinguishes a serious neuromuscular condition from an everyday fasciculation.
