The pattern is simple: inhale through the nose, then at the top of that breath — before exhaling — take a second, shorter sharp inhale on top of it, then release a long, slow exhale through the mouth. That double-inhale, long-exhale pattern is called a physiological sigh, and it's one of the fastest voluntary ways to shift the nervous system toward calm.

Why it works on the vagus nerve directly

The second, smaller inhale re-inflates collapsed air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs, briefly maximizing oxygen exchange, while the long exhale that follows directly stimulates the vagus nerve — the same parasympathetic pathway responsible for slowing heart rate and shifting the body out of fight-or-flight. Extended exhales activate this pathway more strongly than extended inhales do, which is part of why the ratio matters, not just the act of breathing slowly in general.

The exact pattern, step by step

One: inhale through your nose until your lungs feel full. Two, immediately: a second, shorter sharp inhale through your nose on top of that, filling a bit further. Three: a long, slow, complete exhale through your mouth, ideally taking twice as long as the two inhales combined. One or two full cycles is often enough to feel a shift; three to five cycles covers most acute spikes.
