A muscle attached to every hair on your body

Each hair follicle has a tiny muscle attached to it called an arrector pili. When it contracts, it pulls the hair upright and puckers the skin around it — that's the bump you feel. In a furred mammal, this does two useful things: trapping a thicker layer of insulating air when cold, and making the animal look larger and more threatening when scared, since standing fur reads as a bigger silhouette.

A reflex that outlived its main job

Humans have the same arrector pili muscles and the same nervous system wiring, but nowhere near enough body hair for the insulation or size-bluffing effect to matter anymore. The reflex itself never got deleted, though — it's controlled by the sympathetic nervous system, the same fight-or-flight network covered elsewhere on this site, and it still fires on cold and fear exactly as it would have for a much hairier ancestor.

Why music triggers the exact same response

The goosebumps-from-music phenomenon is called frisson, and it isn't a separate reflex — it's the same arrector pili response, triggered by an unexpected shift in a song (a key change, a swelling chorus, a voice breaking on a high note) rather than cold or danger. Brain imaging shows these musical chill moments activate the same reward circuitry, including dopamine release, associated with other intensely pleasurable experiences. The sympathetic nervous system doesn't distinguish "actual threat" from "emotionally intense surprise" particularly well — both can flip the same switch.

Why some people get chills more than others

Frisson susceptibility varies a lot between people, and research has linked it loosely to personality traits associated with openness to experience — people who report being more emotionally responsive to art, music, and aesthetic experiences tend to report frisson more often and more intensely. It's not fully understood why, but it's consistent enough across studies to suggest this isn't random.
