Cold on the roof of the mouth triggers a blood vessel response
The roof of your mouth sits close to a network of blood vessels supplying the brain, including branches of the anterior cerebral artery. When something very cold touches the palate, it triggers rapid vasodilation — a sudden widening — of these vessels, thought to be the body's attempt to quickly warm the area back up by increasing local blood flow.
Why the pain shows up in your forehead
This is where brain freeze becomes a referred-pain story: the trigeminal nerve, which senses both the cold in your mouth and supplies sensation to the front of your face, picks up the sudden vessel dilation as a pain signal. Because that nerve also handles forehead sensation, the brain interprets the signal as coming from the forehead rather than the mouth — the actual site of the trigger.
Why it fades so fast
The vasodilation causing the pain is a temporary, self-correcting response — once the vessels finish their rapid-warming widening and settle back to normal, the pain signal stops. This is why brain freeze, unlike most headaches, typically resolves within 20-60 seconds without any intervention at all.
How to actually shorten it
Pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth, or drinking something warm, both work by warming the area directly, which short-circuits the vasodilation response faster than just waiting it out.
